The first space program to harness energy from the moon without ever leaving Earth.

The Challenge


As the world struggles to meet its 2030 climate goals, we’re losing focus in something essential: renewable energy. We’re even losing focus on our own planet, as global superpowers have entered a new space race for lunar resources. But while others look to the sky, our planet is still rich in untapped energy that can be harnessed with new technology. One such place lies in the middle of the North Atlantic: the Faroe Islands.

The Solution


To bring focus back to Earth and showcase a new energy technology, we brought three unexpected partners together – SKF, Minesto, and Faroese state energy company SEV – and had them join the space race. With one difference: this space program never leaves Earth. Because tides are controlled by the moon, SKF and its partners can harness moon power right here on Earth, by capturing tidal energy. Packaging the technology as a space program turned attention back to renewable energy. It created a platform to explain how it works, its planned 40% contribution to the islands energy by 2030 in support of 100% renewable energy, and SKF’s most important mission: making the most of the resources we already have.

Despite staying on Earth, the space program has everything you’d expect. Space suits, jackets, hats, and of course, a spacecraft. And because every space program needs a space base, the location in the Faroe Islands was renamed “The Faroe Islands Space Station” during the campaign period.
