The Challenge

Japan is one of the world’s most rapidly aging societies—over 29% of the population is 65 or older, and one in three older adults lives with dementia or mild cognitive impairment. A shortage of care workers has intensified pressure on the system. Nichii, Japan’s largest nursing care and medical services provider, faced a specific constraint: reminiscence therapy—a proven method for improving emotional stability and communication in dementia patients—is difficult to implement at scale due to limited staff capacity. The opportunity lay in delivering meaningful engagement without adding to caregivers’ workload.

The Solution

Nichii developed Radio Time Machine, an AI-powered system delivered through a nostalgic radio device that reconstructs daily experiences from specific moments in time. Users dial to a chosen year, triggering the generation of a personalized radio program combining historical context, music, and narration from that era. Because the system generates unique content daily, it encourages repeated engagement.

By combining a familiar analogue interface with generative AI, Radio Time Machine transforms reminiscence therapy from a manual activity into a continuous, system-driven experience. The product stimulates memory recall, supports emotional expression, and encourages communication between users, caregivers, and family members—reducing behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia while operating within existing resource constraints. Currently undergoing validation across Japanese care facilities.
