Digital Arts Network and TVNZ launch On Demand app for New Zealand
AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND – Thursday, February 21, 2013 – Digital Arts Network (DAN), and TVNZ today made New Zealand broadcast history with the launch of the first Ondemand app. The app will bring New Zealanders more of their favourite content across touch-screen Apple mobile devices such as the iPad and iPhone.
More than a year in the making, the collaboration has allowed DAN to partner with TVNZ and offer strategic digital insights to ensure the Ondemand app meets the unique goals and demands of kiwi users.
Che Tamahori, Managing Director of DAN, says there has been a growing trend towards accessing web-based content on-the-go.
“The Ondemand app is an exciting development for the TV industry and it’s really allowed us to showcase our capabilities as one of the country’s preeminent digital agencies. This type of project doesn’t come around every day; it’s as big as it gets in terms of creating an app for mainstream New Zealand, so we’re thrilled to have had the opportunity to partner with TVNZ on this project,” he says
The end result is a state-of-the-art TVNZ Ondemand app that boasts innovative interfaces tailored for touch-screen devices. These include a catch-up calendar listed by the on air-date which makes it easier to keep up with favourite shows, and high resolution graphics for Retina displays making viewing crystal clear.
In addition, the TVNZ Ondemand app has a responsive design that caters to different screen sizes such as the iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPad and iPad Mini and an advanced video player which has adaptive streaming to enable instant viewing when watching over 3G and high quality over broadband and WiFi.
TVNZ’s General Manager of Digital Media, Tom Cotter, says, “I couldn't be happier about the outcome. We always enjoy collaborating with Digital Arts Network and they were with us right from the outset adding strategic thinking and research capabilities. If you are designing interactive products, it’s worth checking out DAN's world class design and delivery team.”
As well as developing the Ondemand app, DAN has engineered a new advertising platform, the ‘Creative Sandbox’. This platform uses existing functionality in mobile devices such as geolocation, compass and sensors to allow advertisers to create engaging content, available exclusively to mobile users.
“We’re excited about the launch but this is only the beginning for the TVNZ Ondemand app. There are already plans underway for enhancements and additional features as well as support for new devices,” concludes Che Tamahori.
